As teachers, it's our duty to teach our students about treating each other kindly, with compassion, no matter what. I feel like I do this daily, but I really enjoy teaching them about Dr. Martin Luther King. I'll activate their schema as we make a circle map, so I can see what they know and determine what I need to teach them. Then, we'll watch a video from Discovery Education. My students are so inspired and moved by Dr. King's values and beliefs. I remember my first year teaching; I had a sweet boy named Miguel who teared up at the end of the video because he didn't think it was fair that Dr. King was shot, because he was such a good man and fought for so many. It was a very touching and powerful moment that Dr. King had this affect on a six year old boy, as he touched many others.
One of my favorite lessons is reading The Crayon Box that Talked
Not only is it a powerful lesson, it makes for an adorable bulletin board on your wall or classroom door so that other students walking by your class can see it.
Here's how it was used in our
class
During Literacy Workshop, one of the writing centers is having the students write down his or her own dream. It came out
super cute!
