How room B 4 celebrated Veteran's Day

This is the first year we really celebrated and learned about Veteran's Day.  The kids were so excited to share about the special people in their lives who are Veterans.
We watched a Discovery Education video on Veterans.  If you don't have a Discovery Ed. account, get one!  They have thousands of videos based on all standards.  I love them because I choose the standard and BAM, tons of great video clips and full movies show up.  You can stream it live or download it.  It's a great way to intro a new lesson or reinforce a concept.
OK, back on topic.  We watched the following video.  My kiddos were so engaged!
Next, we read this adorable poem in Mel D. from Seusstastic's 41 page freebie in her TPT store!  I'm running low on copy paper so instead of putting it in our poetry binder, we read it using our brand new document camera!
We created a Thinking Map: Circle Map of all the reasons we are thankful for our Veterans.
Students used the circle map to write their letters to soldiers.  They were so excited to know that we are sending them overseas.  All in all, a huge success.  This year, I really wanted my kiddos to know why we had Monday off.  I'm so glad I took the time to teach them.
Pick up this freebie in Seusstastic's store!
